Research Presentation - Rising Severe Frostbite Cases in Alberta: Trends, Treatment and Health Interventions
Severe frostbite cases and subsequent amputation rates have recently significantly increased in Edmonton and Calgary. Our ARNET supported study examines these frostbite cases: what temperature they occurred at, who were injured, acute care treatment, and outcomes.  Our results will help guide public health interventions to support equitable care, decrease frostbite cases, severity, and barriers to acute care presentation, a comprehensive acute care clinical pathway, and future studies assessing improved medical management.

Tracy King, RN, Nursing Supervisor, Northern Addiction Center - Detox and Residential Addiction Center

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Tracy is a proud nurse and strong patient advocate.  She completed her undergraduate degree in nursing in 1999.  Her experience in nursing ranges from roles in rural hospital, medicine, palliative care, teaching in post-secondary education, and she is now a staff nurse with detoxification services at NAC. She has a masters degree and is completing this research as part of a PhD program at the University of Calgary.  Tracy is an ARNET Diane Davidson Scholarship Recipient in 2024.

Research Presentation: Understanding Healthcare Experiences for People Struggling with Alcohol Use

People who struggle with alcohol use often feel judged or unwelcome when they seek medical care. Tracy wants to make healthcare spaces safer and more supportive for them. Addiction is often linked to feelings of guilt and shame, and an unwelcoming environment can make things worse. Since alcohol withdrawal can be dangerous without proper treatment, it's important that people feel comfortable getting the care they need.
