Our First Nursing Research Grant Recipient
ARNET is pleased to announce the launch of a new research grant aimed at supporting nursing research in Alberta.
Our first recipient of the research grant is Dr. Carmel Montgomery PhD, MN, RN. Carmel is an early career researcher and is currently an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Alberta.
After many years working as a registered nurse across the care continuum — in rural and urban settings, from palliative home care to ICU, as well as roles in quality/patient safety and process improvement — Carmel transitioned to a program of PhD research focused on evaluating the impact of frailty on clinical and cost outcomes for older patients admitted to ICU, particularly after cardiac surgery.
With the support of ARNET and the CvHS SCN (Cardiovascular Health and Stroke – Strategic Clinical Network), Carmel will be working with Stephanie Wold, Nurse Practitioner, to evaluate a new role in an NP led follow-up clinic for patients who have had heart surgery at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute.
Through this partnership, ARNET is able to provide funding for nursing research, while supporting Alberta nurses to demonstrate their essential skills in innovative new roles to meet the needs of patients.
