Astronaut Health:
How can Care beyond Earth relate to care here on Earth?

Presenter: Katie Samoil, RN, ACCN, PhD Student and ARNET Calgary Health Foundation 2024 Scholar.

Katie will share her nursing journey as a emergency department nurse to PhD researcher. Katie is a born and raised Alberta RN and former national distance athlete. She works at the Foothills Medical Center. Through her PhD research she is studying the application of cardiorespiratory coupling in the microgravity environment of space as it relates to the physiologic changes intubated and sedated and/or paralyzed patients in critical care environments experience. When individuals are no longer autonomously using their respiratory muscles to breathe, they are at risk for muscular and neurovascular deterioration. Her work builds on existing research in this area through exploration of cardiorespiratory coupling.

In this talk, they will discuss how their collaboration came to be and the work they did with healthcare providers in Edmonton and Calgary, uncovering key insights into the challenges faced in EDs when diagnosing cancer. Through personal stories and lessons learned, we'll explore how these findings are shaping new initiatives to enhance early detection and patient care. This project, along with many others making a tangible impact, is made possible by the invaluable support of ARNET, which plays a crucial role in advancing nursing research capacity in Alberta.
